2019 China GT Tianjin Qualifying Report

GT3 CLASS

 

Q1

McLaren factory driver Joe Osborne put the Winning Team 720S GT3 on pole on a single outing with a time of 1:35.956, edging second-placed Jesse Krohn by merely 0.118s. Krohn‘s #91 FIST-Team AAI BMW encountered a technical issue and missed free practice, and Friday afternoon’s qualifying session is the Finn’s first trip out on the Tianjin V1 circuit.

 

Championship contenders Alessio Picariello and Nick Yelloly will share the second row on Saturday in the EWS Craft-Bamboo Racing AMG and FIST-Team AAI BMW respectively. D2’s Peter Liao and FIST’s Ivan Lee took fifth and sixth, ahead of YC Racing’s Lin Nan.

 

Q2

Chinese star Han Han delivered another impressive performance in the Winning Team McLaren and took his second pole position of the season. Lam Yu, after missing the previous rounds in Qinhuangdao, will share the front row with Han after lapping 0.618s behind Han’s times of 1:37.756.

 

Min Heng showed strong pace in the YC Racing AMG and will start third ahead of D2’s Peter Liao. Only 0.03s split FIST’s Kevin Chen and Craft-Bamboo’s Jeffrey Lee and they qualified fifth and sixth ahead of Betty Chen.

 

GTC CLASS

 

Q1

Xtreme Motorsports’ of Dominic Ang set the quickest times in the #25 Radical, despite teammate Song Bo putting the car in the wall in an earlier practice session. However, the #25 will take a five-place grid drop on Saturday for changing vehicle.

 

YC Racing’s Zhou Bishuang, Wang Tao qualified second and third, whereas the boys in the YCRT garage - Li Jiaqi and Shang Lei took fourth and fifth respectively.

 

Q2

CJ Huang took convincing pole for Sunday as his times of 1:39.098 was quicker than the times set by the pro-rated drivers in the first qualifying session. Fellow YC Racing driver Zheng Wancheng and Shang Lei took second and third; Song Bo and Xiao Min shared fourth and fifth spot.

 

GT4 CLASS

 

Q1

AMR Junior driver Ross Gunn, fresh off the back of a podium in the 4 Hours of Silverstone, topped the times in the first GT4 qualifying session with a time of 1:43.928, pipping Winning Team’s Charlie Fagg to pole by a mere 0.157s.

 

D2’s Will Bamber finished a further 0.3s off the McLaren and will share an all-AMG second row with Phantom Pro Racing’s Alex Fontana.

 

Championship leader Rainey He will start fifth ahead of #868’s Luo Kailuo. #17 FIST-Team AAI’s Qi Peiwen, #87 Xtreme Motorsports’ Wei Tianyi, #4 TopGun GT’s Mak Kalok, #999 Team Master Champ’s Wang Hao filled the rest of the grid.

 

Q2

 

Chris Chia is in pole position to retake championship lead from Phantom Pro teammate Rainey He on Sunday in the #5 AMG machine. BSEM Aston Martin’s David Pun showed strong pace and will share the front row with China.

 

Dong Liang completed his quickest lap on his second flying lap but could not improve further in the remaining time. He will start third alongside D2’s Kuo Kuo Hsin.

 

The third row will consist of the exact same combination of #6 AMG (Yang Xi) and #868 McLaren (Lei Ke) – the latter suffered a brake issue towards the dying moments of the session. The fourth and fifth row will also be a complete duplicate of Saturday’s grid consisting of #17 Qi Peiwen, #87 Gao Yang, #4 Ye Xuanhao and #999 Wang Hao.
